How to burn AVI to DVD on Ubuntu 10.04 for playback on my XVID DVD Player?

I am trying to convert some .avi files to dvd format but when it, it says i need the xvid codec . I have searched the internet but cannot find it for mac.

Just downloading some cartoons for my daughter. I know that I need to convert the .avi file to something else so that it can be played on the DVD player when I burn it.
